My Feedback Thoughts
This week, we are discussing the importance of feedback! Feedback is a touchy subject, but it can yield even better results in professional life, in education, and even in personal life. I read two articles that discuss feedback and how it should be handled.
Article 1: 5 Tips for Taking Feedback Like a Champ
The first sentence of this article makes a strong point. We often have difficulty with understanding others' experiences of our own behavior. In many cases, this type of feedback can distort the self-image that we proclaim. The article goes on to discuss several ways we should take feedback and why feedback is important. Though feedback can be uncomfortable, it often yields incredible growth. Our perspective on growth should realize that growth is a good thing, because we haven't yet reached our full potential! Also, we often take the finer points of feedback and incorrectly assign specific problems with our character as a whole. Just because you messed up on part of a project does not make you a bad employee! We should instead find the positive intentions behind our mistake, and then learn to utilize those by responding in a productive way. Feedback is good if we view it with the right perspective.
Article 2: Overcoming the Fear of Feedback
This article explains that one reason we react so strongly and so quickly to "negative" feedback is because we have been conditioned to swiftly react to negative stimuli. Thus, these situations that make us feel attacked or excluded can yield significant emotional responses. Part of utilizing feedback to our advantage involves the perspective with which it is received. As researched by Dr. Dweck and explained in earlier posts, there is a complete difference between approaching work with a "fixed" mindset as opposed to a "growth" mindset. Those with "growth" mindsets learn to use feedback to improve themselves! We can also learn to use feedback to our advantage if we make it a habit to accept and respond to feedback. The more that we understand and notice feedback, the more that we can take action to implement necessary changes!
