Topic Research: Peter Pan (A Pirate's Perspective)
Though I had some interesting options last week for my semester project, I have decided to pursue a version of the Peter Pan story! This fits within the larger category of pirate tales. Not only is this a classic, fun story - it also lends itself to several creative interpretations. Here are several of my ideas, though I already have a feeling of where I want to go with this project.
For those that may not know, the story of Peter Pan involves the exciting story of a young girl named Wendy. She quickly finds herself whisked up on an adventure with a magical boy by the name of Peter Pan. He takes her to his home, an island called Neverland. Here, he leads a band of his friends, called "the lost boys," in battling against an evil pirate named Captain Hook. The story of Peter Pan involves incorporating Wendy into their adventures, with the ultimate defeat of Captain Hook and the return of Wendy to her original home. The retellings that I will investigate involve approaching this story in a fresh way!
Plot 1: Hook the Hero
This perspective reframes the entire story of Peter Pan. While the original views Peter as the protagonist and Captain Hook as the antagonist, I would like to switch their positions. Hook would be the hero, charged with protecting Neverland. Peter, instead, would be the villain. So far, this is looking like the most likely story for my project!
Plot 2: Wendy's Imagination
This version of the plot negates the whole reality of Peter Pan and Neverland. Throughout the story, we would instead come to find out that Wendy is a resident in a psychological ward. The characters in the story are simply figments of her imagination, created by Wendy's interactions with others in the hospital.
Plot 3: Neverland
Instead of focusing on Hook, Peter, or Wendy (the central characters), this perspective may be approached by an outside source from Neverland. This would involve inventing a character not found in the original story. This person would be a resident of Neverland, and the story of Peter Pan could be told from an uninvolved source.
The baseline story will be "Peter Pan" by J.M. Barrie, found online here.
